Our History

Christ Church’s first building in Cody was erected in 1902, and is affectionately referred to today as The Little “Poker” Church, as it was built by money won in a lively poker game held at Cody’s Purcell’s Saloon in 1900. Buffalo Bill and George T. Beck, the founders of the town of Cody, as well as several ranchers at the saloon, were having their usual poker game one evening. The pot grew large and Buffalo Bill, knowing that he should be doing something toward a church in the town, suggested that the winner should donate the money to a church of his choice. George Beck won and he designated the money to go toward a local Episcopal Church, and in late 1901, the first Christ Church was built to specifications for mission churches at that time.  In 1965, due to the growing congregation, another church building known as The Big Church was built.
